In this artwork is depicted a peddler selling fresh water in Summer. He wears an eye-catching kimono with a pattern of carp and a cloth bound around his head, and holds a ladle in his right hand and a metallic bowl in his left hand. Water peddlers used to show up in Summer during which the well water gets warm, and were seen as one of symbols recalling Summer.

Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1865) (also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
