Yanagiwara is an area around present Asakusa, downtown where still remains the atmosphere of Edo. People walking on the night street like shadow picture hold a lantern or a lamp to light their steps in the darkness. The ground is wet and muddy because of the heavy rain, reflecting the lights on it. The lights look fragile like those of candles. This is an artwork making feel the nostalgic atmospher in the old downtown.

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847 – 1915) was a woodblock print artist.

His childhood name was Katsunosuke.
He studied oil paintings and Japanese paintings under British painter, Charles Wirgman and Kawanabe Gyousai and Shibata Zeshin respectively.

Kiyochika started his career as an ukiyo-e artist. Light and shadow are beautifully depicted in his artworks.
Gorgeous sunsets, brilliant sunrises, soft lights illuminated along the river depicted in his works deeply touch the viewer’s heart.
He gained his fame when he created a new genre of western style woodblock paints called “Kousen-ga” which employs new techniques to express light and shade.

He is also well known for sarcastic multi-color printed cartoon series (Nishiki-e Manga) called “Kiyochika Ponchi”.
