This is a landscape around Ochanomizu, Tokyo, surrounded by thick blanches of trees. Here used to be a peaceful place full of nature you could never imagine from the present town with a lot of buildings. Here depicted is a lyric winter day view along Kanda River you can see in the middle of the screen. Each subject is painted using gradation and perspective, without sharp outlines. That foggy atmosphere in the entire screen seems to give us a nostalgic and idyllic impression. Created in 1880.

Slightly stained and folded.

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847 – 1915) was a woodblock print artist.

His childhood name was Katsunosuke.
He studied oil paintings and Japanese paintings under British painter, Charles Wirgman and Kawanabe Gyousai and Shibata Zeshin respectively.

Kiyochika started his career as an ukiyo-e artist. Light and shadow are beautifully depicted in his artworks.
Gorgeous sunsets, brilliant sunrises, soft lights illuminated along the river depicted in his works deeply touch the viewer’s heart.
He gained his fame when he created a new genre of western style woodblock paints called “Kousen-ga” which employs new techniques to express light and shade.

He is also well known for sarcastic multi-color printed cartoon series (Nishiki-e Manga) called “Kiyochika Ponchi”.
