Here depicted is "Ikaiei No Tatakai(Battle of Ikaiei)" during the Sino-Japanese War. As the morale of Chinese soldiers dropped after Ryojun had fallen, Japanese army could easily landed on the Ikaiei to fight against Chinese army, for the first time,in a big scale. Beyond the plain covered with snow, Chinese triangle flags can be seen faintly like lanterns. The castle gate looks burning with flame. Kiyochika skillfully reproduced the color of flames of war emerged in the darkness.

Good color and impression.

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847 – 1915) was a woodblock print artist.

His childhood name was Katsunosuke.
He studied oil paintings and Japanese paintings under British painter, Charles Wirgman and Kawanabe Gyousai and Shibata Zeshin respectively.

Kiyochika started his career as an ukiyo-e artist. Light and shadow are beautifully depicted in his artworks.
Gorgeous sunsets, brilliant sunrises, soft lights illuminated along the river depicted in his works deeply touch the viewer’s heart.
He gained his fame when he created a new genre of western style woodblock paints called “Kousen-ga” which employs new techniques to express light and shade.

He is also well known for sarcastic multi-color printed cartoon series (Nishiki-e Manga) called “Kiyochika Ponchi”.
