The artwork considered as a former stock of Honganji has a Hakogaki done by Honnyo Shonin, the 19th Master of Nishi-Honganji, and the description in the seal makes us easily presume that this artwork was depicted at the new year banquet, and that, through the monks attended there, the artwork was handed over to Nishi-Honganji. The Hyoso (pasting painting or calligraphy on paper or fabric for display) made of navy blue Kire (fabric) decorated by Hosoge Karakusamon (arabesque and flower motif) gives an impression that this belongs to temple or shrine, so the Hyoso might have been done at Nishi-Honganji.
Maruyama Ohkyo (1733-1795) was a late-Edo painter, who learnt Kano method from Ishida Yutei. He took in So-Gen Chinese technique for his sketch-like style, and also studied European perspective. Excelled at animal and plant sketches.
Hanging scroll, ink on paper, sighed and sealed. Honnyo's hakogak.
