Bee and monkey is an auspicious subject with a wish of serving court, because, in Chinese, the letters have same sounds as those of meaning “serving court”.
Kotetsubai (1848-1899) was a painter in the era of Shin, whose father, Koin, was also a painter. He married a Japanese woman and came over to Japan. Like Ohyabai, his plum paintings are reputed.
