“Sho Sho Hakkei Zu” is a traditional subject depicted eight famous landscapes in Sho Sho area in China. It seemed to arrive in Japan around in the Kamakura era. Gaho, who could depict several kinds of Sansui, used a simple well-balanced composition like Sogen painting in this artwork, that proves he studied hard to master the ancient style. Placing eight landscapes at the center of the screen and also giving them a noble elegance as Sansui might look easy but actually very difficult. This artwork proves that he had a variety of expression.

Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908) from Edo(Tokyo) began to learn Kano painting at 12, and made a long-term friendship with his fellow, Kano Hougai. As the last Kano painter, he contributed to building a basement of the modern Japanese art, and also instructed many famous painters including Yokoyama Taikan.

Hanging scroll, ink on paper, signed and sealed, Kawai Gyokudo's Hakogaki, Nijubako.
