Healthy massively-built Oharame (young female merchant selling firewood as putting them on her head) with a particular charm is one of subjects Morita liked to depict. Morita born in Kyoto handled Maiko, Oharame and historical personages from the beginning of his career, and created masterpieces such as “Oharame Sandai” in 1972 and “Kyoe “, folding screen, in 1973, based on his elaborate research. Although moon is not depicted, the woman’s beautiful white silhouette emerges in the dark silent night. This is an artwork which proves Morita’s spirituality.
Morita Kohei (1916- ) from Kyoto learnt from Kobayashi Kahaku and Yasuda Yukihiko. After the war, he energetically exposed his artworks at Inten. He excelled at historical personages, supported by his abundant knowledge of history, and other artworks based on episodes.
