Toyohiro is known as a master of Utagawa Hiroshige. The beauty Toyokuni depicted has an oval face, long neck and round jaw, she doesn’t have a gorgeous look like Utamaro’s, but has a gentle dignity. In most of Shunga, each scene is depicted independently, but in this artwork, those are connected each other, and only separated by furniture like folding screen put between them, as if they are all on the same stage. Besides, these properties are mainly used for producing the stage, nevertheless, they are elaborately depicted up to the motif of Kimono hanging over a partition or the peony drawn on a folding screen. Depiction of personage is also dramatic. Each couple seems to have a secret in their relationship, such as a man whose face pushed away by his lover.
Utagawa Toyohiro (1765-1829) was an ukiyoe painter in the late-Edo era. His style is calm and conservative, but some of beauties he drew have slight sadness in their intelligent looks, that is now making an impression of his entire works.
