The subject of this artwork seemed to be taken from a legend with two main characters, Kumawakamaru and Shinotsuka Iganokami, involved in Nanbokucho Doran(battle) which later became a base of the story of "Taiheiki", a famous novel. The person in the right of screen is Kumawakamaru, Son of Hino Suketomo. He headed for Sado to revenge for his father who had been killed on charges of involved in a plan of rebellion againt Emperor Godaiko. Probably, this artwork is depicting a scene of this story. The young woman depicted in the center and left of screen is Daughter of Shinotsuka Iganokami who also got involved in the plan of rebellion, who was known as a brutal woman like her father.
Good condition, color and impression
Although Utagawa Kuniyoshi created all genre of ukiyoe, many of his impressive works are not portraits of beauties or actors. He is called an “artist of unique imagination” since he introduced new ideas one after another out of his abundant imagination into wide ranged field of his artworks.
Among of all Kuniyoshi’s artworks, giga pieces (humorous or satiric paintings, or sketches or drawings done in fun) are most popular. Especially his giga pieces which depict anthropomorphic images of animals have been very popular throughout the ages. Kuniyoshi was known as very enthusiastic ailurophile (cat lover) and depicted many cats in his artworks. He also anthropomorphized gold fish, carp and turtles.
