An exhibition of Shunga has been hold at Eisei bunko museum in Tokyo.
Many people have rushed into the site and sometimes the entrance is controlled due to the queue length.

Hokusai　"Kinoe no Komatsu" which might be the most famous shunga is also displayed in the exhibition.

Shunga is erotic art was depicted in around Edo period.
In 2013 the same kind of exhibition at the British museum caused great sensation gathering about 90.000 customers.
But the traveling exhibitions were not hold in Japan, origin of Shunga.
From Meiji period to recent days, shunda has been under control.
It was said that it was so difficult for to hold shunga exhitions in Japan because of such background.
This is the first large scale exhibition of Shunga in Japan.
So the title of the exhibition is "The world wowed before us".

Why dose Shunga attract so many people?
Because shunga is not only erotic, but very artistic and has humorous elements.
A lot of famous Ukiyoe artist depicted Shunga for example, Utamaro, Kiyonaga,Hokusai, Harunobu, Kuniyosi Kunisada and so on.
It is said that some Daimyo, a feudal lord ordered Ukiyo-e artists to draw gorgeous Shunga books as special new year presents.
Shunga were used as good-luck charm for solders as it evoke life force.
Artists exercised their skill in Shunga using expensive material such as gold and silver.
Most women and men in Shunga are fully clothed.
One of the reasons is the temperature in Edo but another reason is thought that painters wanted to show off their skill in motif of kimonos.

In fact the bridge was broken due to the weight of people in 1897.

If you are planning go to Japan, where do you want to go?
Kyoto? Hakone?
Today I will recommend you Kanazawa.
Kanazawa is located in northwest of Tokyo.
It flourished as a castle town of the Kaga clan during the Edo period.
The city is well known for its traditional culture, for example art, crafts and tea ceremony.

Recently tourists have been flock to Kanazawa.
Because the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train began operation last month.
Once four hours away from Tokyo by train, it takes only 2 hours and a half now.
Kanazawa have become easy visiting distance.

There are many tourist spots in Kanazawa.
One of most famous place is Kenrokuen Garden.
That is originally part of Kanazawa castle.

月岡雪鼎とその一門－大坂の肉筆浮世絵－

最近は大英博物館での春画展の影響か、春画がクローズアップされる雪鼎ですが、江戸中期の大坂を代表する肉筆浮世絵師として多くの美人画を残しています。秋華洞でも春画以外にそうした掛軸を扱ってきましたが、とくに海外にファンが多いようです。

■　今月の役者絵　■
秋華洞は歌舞伎座から一番近い浮世絵商。
役者絵の在庫の中からおすすめの役者絵をピックアップしてご紹介します。

今月は歌舞伎座ではなく国立劇場の演目から。明日まで通し狂言伊賀越道中双六　(いがごえどうちゅうすごろく)が上演されています。これは日本三大仇討ちの伊賀越えの仇討ちをベースにしたお芝居で、なかでも「沼津」という演目が有名です。

After Christmas next big event in Japan is New Year's Eve.
New Year's Eve is very important day for Japanese people along with New Year's Day.
At that day, Japanese clean their houses by all the family to welcome New Year.
And at the night they eat soba buckwheat noodle hoping longevity.
Because its∏ length is associated with longevity.

This is an artwork depicted on a basis of an oral tradition on Oji Inari Shrine presently located in Oji, Kita ward, Tokyo. According to the legend, the area used to be a huge rice field, and on every New Year's Eve, foxes got together at a giant nettle tree for a rite, then visited Oji Inari to complete their celebration. There are many landscape paintings of Oji which refer to the legend, but this artwork particularly holds a fantastic mood.

Like Iguassu and Niagara, there are a lot of beautiful waterfalls all over Japan.
This Ukiyo-e is one of Journey to the Waterfalls series in All the Provinces by Hokusai.

"Aoigaoka" where daimyos have lived in was located near Edo castle.
It is not a large waterfall.

Mt. Takao located in the west of Tokyo accepts disciplinants.
It's an hour train ride away from JR Shinjuku station and then a 15min cable car ride to the waterfall.

Shukado is dealing with a wide-range of first-class Japanese fine arts from the Edo era to modern times.
This exhibition features such our main items, Kakejiku, Ukiyo-e, and contemporary painting by 5 young artists.
You can enjoy beautiful Utamaro's Ukiyo-e and beauty of the kakejiku by Kitani Chigusa featuring our latest catalog's front page.
Furthermore, at the exhibition we show the painting by Ikenaga Yasunari whose art book has become a big hit.

He paints women on linen canvas with Japanese-style painting method.

The products planned for sale in overseas are stationery including a notebook in Russia, a book cover in Spain, a lithograph in Germany etc.

Have you ever seen Sumo?
The Nihon Sumo Kyokai was proud to announce that on March 26, 2014, Ozeki Kakuryu was promoted to the rank of Yokozuna.
He has become the 71th Yokozuna in history.
Sumo is a kind of wrestling in Japanese style.
Originally a court function, it has a history of more 1000 years.
In the beginning, bouts were held in front of Emperor and they forecasted the prospects of the year.

In Edo period, a lot of tournaments were held in temples to gather donations.
Sumo was one of most the popular entertainment along with Kabuki.
The ritualistic is the attractive point of Sumo.
For example, in an entering ceremony performed by Grand champion, an action, stomping is said that it means to keep away evil spirits lurking in the ground.
And throwing salt before bouts is to purify the ring from evil spirits.

By the way, there is a sponsor system in the Grand Sumo Tournaments held 6 times in a year.
Rock star, Paul McChartney became a sponsor at last Kyusyu Grand Sumo Tournament using the system.
(the prices for banners set at \60,000 each)
His latest album "New" appeared on the sponsor flags were paraded throughout the ring.
And the comment "Paul McChartney, News now on sale!" was announced in the stadium.
Now let's look at some of Sumo-e!

A man standing the ring is the referee.
The reason why he wears the sword is that he appeals his decision to hara-kiri if he has bad judgment.
(Of course they never do that.)

Recently I climbed Mt. Fuji taking only about 1munite!
It's not genuine Mt. Fuji, but a Fujizuka mound, a kind of an artificial Mt.fuji.
In Edo period people believed Mt. Fuji was a sacred place and there were a lot of pilgrimage groups called Fujiko.
They went on pilgrimages to Mt. Fuji.
But some people among them could not take part in the tour because of their budget, their job or some circumstances.
Especially at that time, women were prohibited to climb Mt.Fuji except a special one year of 60 years.
Therefore small hills which they could experience simulation to climbed Mt. Fuji.

Some of them still remain and I went to one of them, Hatonomori shrine in Shibuya ward, Tokyo.

It is 6-7meters high made in around 1789.
A small shrine is located in the top of the hill is covered with lava carried from Mt. Fuji.
They planted bamboo glasses and made small cave made by lava.
After climbing the Fujizuka, you can receive the certification the shrine office!

So today I will introduce Ukiyo-e depicting Mt. Fuji.
This is the most famous series of Mt. Fuji!.

The other day I saw Japanese plum blooming.
Japanese plum is representative example of spring flowers.
Kairakuen is famous for its beautiful Japanese plum blossoms.

There are a lot of Ukiyo-e depicting Japanese plum.
It seems this is the most famous among them.

It is known as the one Vincent Van Gogh copied.
He was astonished at its bold composition and outline.

This is same place , Kameido Umeyashiki was depicted in Ukiyo-e by Hirosige.

Speaking of Japanese plum, we eat them as pickled plum.
Pickled plum are very salty and sour but are good at preservative quality.
Pickled plum that made by traditional way hold out for one hundred years!
So it is said its' citric acid component is effective to reduce fatigue.

This is also famous site for Japanese plum , Kamata along with Kameido.

Last year a TV program gained much popularity.
That was " Amachan" which was broadcasted in NHK(National TV)

The main character, Aki Amano called "Amachan" is a shy and ordinary high-school girl in Tokyo. But one day, her mother takes her to her hometown in Kita-Sanriku,
The northern coastal area of Iwate Prefecture, where she meets her grandmother who is making a living as a woman diver catching fish.
She is so impressed with her job and aims to be like her grandmother. The young female diver gets to be known so soon and becomes an idol in this area. However, when a big show biz company spots her, she decides to go back to Tokyo dreaming of becoming a real idol.

Ama means a woman diver as a job to collect abalones, sea urchins and so on.
The history of ama goes back nearly 2000 years.

Ama diver is one of theme for Ukiyo-e.
This is Genji-e depicting Ama divers."

They collected abalones and are slicing them long and making "dried abalones".
The Japanese believe that the majority of ama are women.
Because their bodies differ from men.
The fat on a female body is distributed differently than on men, which ensures that they can stay warmer in colder water.
Traditionally, and even as recently as the 1960s, ama dove wearing only a loincloth.
Even in modern times, ama dive without air tanks or scuba gears .

First I will write about Chushingura, The Treasury of Loyal Retainers.
Last Friday, 47 Ronin staring Keanu Reeves has been released in Japan.
The movie is based on a famous fiction samurai story, Chushingura, The Treasury of Loyal Retainers

Kanadehon Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers) is based on a true incident which took place between 1701 and 1703 in Edo period. It is Japan's most famous revenge story.
The central story concerns the daimyo Enya Hangan, who is goaded into drawing his sword and striking a senior lord, Ko no Morono . Drawing one's sword in the shogun's palace was a capital offense.
So Hangan is ordered to commit seppuku, or ritual suicide by disembowelment and and his domain confiscated.
Next year, in 1702, 47 of Asano's retainers avenged his death by attacking and killing Kira and immediately became heroes among commoner.
In 1748, the puppet play "Kanadehon Chushingura" appeared.
Since then, Chusingura has been the single most popular play in all Japanese theatre.
Not only puppet play, the story has been told in kabuki, bunraku, stage plays, films, novels, television shows and other media.
Now Kanadehon Chushingura is in performance in kabuki theater.

That is "Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art" held in the British museum.

Shunga is erotic Japanese art painted from 1600s to 1900s.
A lot of spectator packs the exhibition every day so sometimes the entrance is gotten under control.
This exhibition has attracted not only spectator but many mass media.

The word, Shunga might bring you the image of secret pleasure but Shunga had held several meanings in Edo period in Japan. For example, as Shunga was thought as a painting for victory, warriors brought Shunga under their armors as a charm. There was a custom exchange gift of gorgeous Shunga to celebrate New years' day among samurai warriors. Why were there custom in Edo period?
Because shunga was thought as the symbol of life force and prosperity of offspring.
Furthermore mothers gave her daughters as sexual education when they married.
Anyway, Shunga was very popular at that time in Japan among ordinary people.
So most Ukiyoe painters produced Shunga.

This might be most popular Shunga by Hokusai.

This a hand scroll consisting of 13 prints from Kinoe no Komatsu including "Octopus and Ama".

Kabuki plays repeatedly became the theme for Shunga because of its popularity.
Those are Shunga books were painted by Kunisada in a parody of Chusingura, Treasury of Loyal Retainers.

This series was in a parody of 53 station of Tokaido which started at Edo and led Kyoto having a lot of scenic places.

Erotic Japanese art was heavily suppressed in Japan from the 1870s.
It has been difficult to hold exhibitions of Shunga in Japan until very recently.

Good afternoon from Akiko Yamada of Shukado.
I am sorry that I have not sent our newsletter to you for a long time.

We Japanese have received big news recently.
Tokyo has been chosen by the International Olympic Committee to host the 2020 Summer Games.
In Japan there is a National holiday called Sports Day in October.
This National holiday was established memorizing Tokyo Olympic Games held in 1964.
At this day, a lot of sport meets are held all over Japan.

Not only sports, but there are a lot of amusement in autumn in Japan.
For example, food, viewing color leaves, reading books, arts and so on.
(In Japan autumn is thought as good season for reading books, enjoying arts.)
Today I will introduce you to Japanese distinctive style to enjoy autumn.
Japanese people enjoy listening to the chirping sound of bell-ringing crickets in autumn nights.
This kakejiku by Kikuchi Yosai was depicting the scene of aristocrats catching insects like bell-ringing crickets.

In Heian period (about 1100 years ago) aristocrats enjoyed catching insect and competing on its voices.

Some people especially European people might think that custom weird.
According to an article, Japanese listen to crickets' voice with left brain as a kind of good music.
On the other hand, European people recognize crickets' voice with right brain as noise!
This article also says only Japanese and Polynesian listen to crickets' voice with left brain.
It is mystery.
