Information

LET US EXPLAIN OUR COMPANY NAME "SHUKADO"

“Shu-u” in Chinese characters means autumn. This Chinese character is taken from our company director’s first name "Chi-aki" (Chi means thousand and Aki means autumn)”.

Shukado’s “Ka” means flowers or gorgeous. We chose this word because our chairman Jichiro Tanaka loves colorful and spectacular Japanese paintings.

“Do-u” means a cave. The Chinese character “do” usually used for the end of the business names of antique shops.

※(calligraphy)an artwork by Jichiro Tanaka, Chairman

Thus, Shukado means “The gallery of golden autumn” and our trademark is a colored MOMIJI (a Japanese maple).
Autumn in Japan is a very beautiful season.
We can see the leaves of the trees tuning red or yellow, golden ears of rice and wheat and beautiful flowers in the fields.
Our trade name reflects the image of such beautiful autumn scenes.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
I have been dealing with Japanese fine arts for 40 years.
As an art dealer, it was my great pleasure to be able to see many wonderful art pieces.
I introduced and sold art pieces to public and private art museums all over Japan and to individual collectors.
I also have some experience in purchasing and selling important cultural assets.
When I was young, I used to scramble to deliver Japanese antique books to universities in North America and Hawaii. Recently, I sometimes go to auctions held in London and NY to purchase first-class Japanese art objects.

I am currently engaged in art authentication and purchase of the objects brought to our gallery by individual customers and other galleries. I am proud to be a connoisseur who can authenticate and appraise a wide range of Japanese fine arts including Japanese antique books, rare books, hanging scrolls (Kakejiku) and Japanese paintings.
Although it is difficult to get rare and wonderful Japanese fine arts these days, we are proud to be able to introduce some first-class Japanese fine arts to the world.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
What comes up to you if you think of Japanese fine arts? Many of you may think of ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e printings represented by the art works by Hiroshige and Hokusai are the most prevalent Japanese fine arts in the world and ukiyo-e is the most famous Japanese icon. We sell many genuine ukiyo-e printings.

However, ukiyo-e consists only one category of the Japanese fine arts.
In each period of Japanese history from Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, Edo, Meiji, Taisyo, Showa to post-war period, Japanese fine arts reflecting the culture of the period bloomed such as native but the exquisite picture scrolls of the Heian period (8th -12th century) and the elegant calligraphy written in the pieces of antique books and scrolls (Kohitsu-gire).
I feel that many things of the wonderful Japanese fine arts with breathtaking beauty and humor, which also is deeply associated with the Zen philosophy, are still unknown to many people.
I am proud to introduce brilliant and vivid Japanese fine arts from each period where artists tried to create something new while they carried on the tradition from Ginza, Tokyo.
