Dear customers and friends,

Good afternoon from Kenshi of Shukado.

Hot and humid weather still continues in Japan.
I can hardly wait for the autumn!

And in such weather, our staff found a plant, which grows wild from small cracks in the sidewalk just in front of our gallery building.

What a vigorous pepper it is!!
In Japan, we call this kind of vegetable as "Dokonjo (gutsy) vegetable".
So in this case, this pepper is called "dokonjo pepper".

And today, I'd like to introduce you several people who look gutsy in ukiyo-e.

Dear customers and friends,

Good afternoon from Kenshi of Shukado.
Our short summer holiday ended, and our gallery reopens now.
And I hope you are enjoying your summer break.

In Japan, the mid-August is the time when we welcome back the spirits of our ancestors.
This event is called "obon", and during the time, we return home and visit family graves.

By the way, do you believe in ghosts??
Personally, I'm not convinced of the existence of them.
However, contradictorily, I have seen them twice...
I hope that those things just happened in my dream.

In the Edo period, the time without electricity, I think that the existence of the ghosts are commonly believed in. In reality, there is a lot of ukiyo-e depicting them.

And here are the ghost prints we have:

Have a nice weekend!

Dear customers and friends,

Good evening from Kenshi of Shukado.

Have you enjoyed the Olympic games?
6 days has already been passed since the opening ceremony.

Since the time difference between Japan and U. K. is 8 hours,
I haven't had enough sleep nowadays...

I hope that every athlete can do their best!

In this newsletter, I wanted to show you some ukiyoe in which people enjoy sports.
Yet, I heard that there was no concept of the sports in the Edo period.
Even Sumo was shrine ritual.
So today, I'd like to introduce you several ukiyo-e which look like people doing sports.
